Foley Gallery is pleased to present Land/(e/scape, an exhibition featuring the work of Amy Casey, Elizabeth Chiles, and Véronique La Perrière M. While each woman works in a different medium, all three artists abstract landscapes to create surreal images that at once connect us to and disconnect us from the environments we might think at first, we recognize. Upon inspection, the scenes become less familiar and more unfixed, allowing us to transport into these dreamlike landscapes, and if we welcome it, to escape deeply into them.

In Amy Casey’s new series of perplexing and fascinating paintings, single buildings are fully entrenched within the surrounding nature they rest upon. In these 6x6” acrylic works, Casey intertwines images from the city, nature walks, and eco-anxiety dreams to create asymmetrical landscapes with buildings immersed, almost hidden, within the land. Partially inspired by natural disasters and the more elusive effects of climate change, Casey meditates on human’s adaptive and resilient nature and the new forms of living that likely lie ahead. Equally disturbing and enchanting, her work celebrates being alive in this strange world while recognizing the uncertainty of its future.

Using the camera to blend the internal and external worlds, Elizabeth Chiles’ poetic and ephemeral photographs hail from two bodies of work: Weave and Time Being. Both series use weaving as an analogy for communication, cooperation, and states of interactive being within the body and landscape. Her work depicts plants and trees existing in the dual space of materiality and immateriality and is informed by the phenomenological exchanges within the living world. Chiles’ photographs remind us we are constantly in the process of both shaping and being shaped by our environments, while also revealing the connected sensuality of being alive.

Véronique La Perrière M’s series of drawings, The Enchanted Traveler, continues her examination into states of consciousness, transformations, and imaginative engagements with the universe and its materials. The series, named after a Nikolai Leskov book, that she found in her father’s suitcase, is an exploration into the limits of the physical body and the infinite dreams of our inner worlds. La Perrière represents bodies mingling with elements of nature, depicting the figures almost transforming into the landscape itself.
